Who this is for

Built for freelancers who are ready for client work

You might be newer to freelancing, years into it, or running a small agency. What matters is that you know how to work with clients: taking calls, asking good questions, pricing your services, writing proposals, and delivering the work.

Unicorn Factory helps clients discover reliable local talent. It is one useful channel for finding client work, especially when you already have a strong service to offer.

How does it work?

We help clients find you, then you run the opportunity

Unicorn Factory is designed to create better introductions between Kiwi businesses and New Zealand based freelancers. Once the connection is made, the client relationship is yours to manage.

Clients discover your profile

Once accepted, we create a public profile that helps clients understand who you are, what you do, and whether you might be a fit for their project.

Clients send direct inquiries

If a client finds your profile and wants to talk, they can submit an inquiry. We forward it to you so you can decide whether to take the conversation further.

Relevant job briefs reach your inbox

When a client posts a brief that matches your skills, we notify you by email. If you are interested, you can put yourself forward for the client to review.

What happens after you apply

1

Apply with the details clients need

Tell us about your services, experience, portfolio, location, and how you work with clients.

2

We review your fit for the marketplace

We look at how you present yourself, the quality of your work, and whether your services are a good fit for the Kiwi businesses using the site.

3

Use credits when leads come through

Once your profile is active, you choose a lead-credit pack. Packs start at $199 + GST for 5 lead credits, and you can add more when you need them.

4

Run the opportunity like your own business

A lead gives you a warm introduction. From there, you handle the call, proposal, pricing, contract, payment, and delivery directly with the client.

FAQ

Before you apply

Who is Unicorn Factory for?

Unicorn Factory is for people who are committed to freelancing and ready to work with clients. That includes newer freelancers, established freelancers, solo operators, and agency owners who understand the basics of client work.

Can I join if I have a full-time job?

Yes, if you already freelance alongside your job and have time to respond to clients, take calls, create proposals, and deliver the work. The platform works best when you already have some client experience to build on.

Do I need to be based in New Zealand?

Yes. Freelancers need to be based in New Zealand. One of the main reasons clients use Unicorn Factory is to work with people who understand the local market and operate in the same time zone.

What makes a strong application?

We look for freelancers who present themselves clearly, show credible work, communicate professionally, and give clients confidence. Your bio, website, portfolio, LinkedIn, and case studies all help us understand whether you are a good fit.

How do credits work?

Accepted freelancers buy lead credits. When we send you a relevant lead or introduction, you use a credit. If a lead is clearly not legitimate or outside the standard we expect, we can review it and refund the credit where appropriate.

How much does it cost to join?

There is no monthly membership fee to keep your profile on Unicorn Factory. Accepted freelancers buy lead credits when they are ready to receive introductions. Credit packs currently start at $199 + GST for 5 lead credits, with a 10-credit pack available for $349 + GST.

Does joining guarantee work?

Leads can open the door, but clients still choose who they want to work with. Your pricing, proposals, communication, availability, and fit for the project all play a part.

How do contracts and payments work?

You manage contracts, scope, pricing, payment, and delivery directly with the client. Unicorn Factory does not take a percentage of your project revenue, so the working relationship stays between you and the client.

How does Unicorn Factory differ from other freelancing platforms?

Unicorn Factory is New Zealand focused, curated, and built around local client relationships. It is a practical channel for your freelance business, designed to sit alongside the other ways you find work.

Ready to add another lead channel?

Apply if you are based in New Zealand, committed to freelancing, and ready to meet clients who are looking for local talent.

Applications are reviewed monthly, typically in the week of the 20th.
